For those of us who discovered makeup in the 90s, it can sometimes feel hard to get on board with this new craze surrounding lip gloss. We often find ourselves confronted with memories of a gloopy and sticky clear gel. Rest assured, lip gloss has come a long way since then!

Now, lip glosses boast hydrating and smooth formulas that are really comfortable to wear. That’s why glassy lips are such a popular trend – and, of course, we want to help you to pull it off! Cue our ‘Love Crosses Borders’ edit and these top tips on how to apply lip gloss.

About Your Floss My New Favourite Gloss

That’s right! Our February edit includes a ‘new wave’ lip gloss that is bound to become your new favourite.

Brought to you by American beauty brand Floss, this lip gloss boasts a formula that isn’t glittery, sticky or grimy. Instead, it is seriously hydrating and long-lasting. Plus, it sits well on your lips and makes them look seriously plump. Don’t believe me? Here’s how to apply lipstick in this new age…

Insider Tip: If you have thin lips or they are losing their fullness (yes, that can happen with age!), then using a lip gloss can help to compensate. A high-impact gloss will create the illusion of bigger lips.

How To Apply Lip Gloss

1. Prep Is Key

Whenever you apply a lippy to your pout (whether that be a liner, lipstick or lip gloss), it’s always good practice to start with smooth lips.

A lip scrub is a great way of buffing away any dead skin cells (Barry M's Mango Lip Scrub is one of my favourites), while a lip mask can help to hydrate and plump your pout.

2. Line Your Lips

I think we can all agree that there’s no comparison between a matte lipstick and a lip gloss in terms of staying power. Of course, there is a trick to make it last longer: line and contour your lips!

Start by drawing a cross at the top of your Cupid’s bow, then apply your pencil along your top lip from the outer corner towards the centre. Next, draw along your bottom lip from the centre outwards. Finally, lightly fill in your lips with the liner and set them with powder.

Insider Tip: The pink Saint Luxe lip liner would work great with your Floss lip gloss!

3. Apply Lip Gloss Correctly

Now that your lips are fully prepped and primed, it’s time to apply lip gloss. It can be tempting to just sweep it onto your lips as you would a lipstick. However, if you want to avoid that tacky, sticky feeling, you should do this instead:

Apply the gloss to your bottom lip only, then rub your lips together. It will add serious shine without feeling thick and uncomfortable.

4. Wear It Over Your Lipstick

Of course, a lip gloss is also a great way of making your lipstick look even better! After applying your lipstick, complete the above step. It’ll give your pout a beautiful sheen.

Now that you know how to apply lip gloss so that it sits comfortably on your lips, I’ve no doubt that it will become a makeup bag essential.
