Much like filling your pencil case at school with a whole host of colouring pencils, our makeup bags call out for a variety of lip shades. Sure, there tends to be that one go-to colour we pretty much always reach for, but it's also fun to mix things up a bit for different occasions, right? After all, that staple nude lip may be your day-to-day, but sometimes only a bold red or bright orange will do.

So, we went in search of the best formulas on the high street in a bid to help you extend your lipstick collection without breaking the bank (or drying out your lips)...

A glossy finishThanks to the inclusion of shea butter and vitamin E, Barry M's lip paint imparts a dewy slick of colour onto your lips for a polished, highly pigmented finish. Barry M Satin Superslick Lip Paint, £4.99

Long-lastingThese lipsticks have been a go-to for us for years now. Offering up a whole range of colours that really last, the creamy texture makes applications easy and the colour pay off is on point. Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick, £4.99

The lip plumperProviding a soft finish, this lipstick is super easy to apply on-the-go thanks to the crayon-shape. The clever formula sculpts, defines and visibly volumises your lips within one slick of colour. Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Matte Lip Colour, £3.50

Velvety textureFrom subtle nude to punchy pink, this lipstick from NYX is available in a jaw-dropping variety of hues, providing endless colour options to extend your collection with. The mineral-based emollient lasts all day - and night for that matter - and doesn't feather. NYX Extra Creamy Round Lipstick, £4

The £1 lipstickYep, really. You could get your hands on a new lip shade for as little as £1. MUA's formula has incredible colour pay-off - for a more subtle finish, simply blot it into your lips using your fingertip. MUA Lipstick, £1
