The Pantone Fashion Colour Report cites 17-2028, the steady blue of Riverside, as the current trend calling it ‘cool and calming, strong and stable’. But how on earth do you wear the cool calming tones of this blue hue?
Blue eyeshadow got a bad rap in the 80s, but wear it right and it can be dazzling. Riverside’s bright, but earthed tone is actually a more wearable blue than most.
Here are a few ways to add it to your makeup bag...
Nails Unlike other trends Pantone’s fashion shades don’t come and go overnight so you can commit to a gel mani in a Riverside tone with the confidence you’ll be in style the entire time you wear it. The Hand & Foot Spa Professional Polish in Denim Blue, £15, is a wait-dry formula that hits that Riverside note perfectly.
Lips It’s not for everyone, but should you wish to try a blue tone on your lips then Lipstick Queen Hello Sailor Lip Gloss, £22, starts of as a topaz blue shade, but then morphs into a flattering lip. The blue pearl shimmer makes your teeth appear whiter and also brightens the whites of your eyes.
LidsThe icy shimmering blue eyeshadows of Pat Butcher and 80s backing singers are still a stone-cold no-no, but Riverside’s cool but deep tones are far more flattering. Clinique Lid pop in Surf Pop, £13.50 and Diego Dalla Palma Matte Eye Shadow in Deep Blue, £12, both look pretty as a wash of colour over the entire lid or used as a liner when mixed with water.
LashesSometimes it’s the subtle changes that have the most effect and adding the blueness of Riverside to the inky black of a mascara can brighten eyes very easily. RMK Separate Curl Mascara in Blue, £23, comes in a Blackest Blue shade that has the ‘lift’ of navy pigments to accentuate eye colour and give a finish that’s just that little bit softer than black.
Eyes Brown eyes do very well with some blue tones and if you want a shade that’s wearable and takes no fuss to apply then Sisley Phyto Eye Twist in Lagoon, £27.90, is a wise choice. A quick scribble on the lids, smudge in with fingers and the soft focus powders do the rest. Or if liner is your thing, Make Up Forever Aqua Liner in Diamond Blue, £16, is ultra flatter when lined along the upper lid. It makes your eyes look brighter and more defined and for times when black liner is too severe, a shade like this gives you definition in a far more subtle. This shade is especially flattering on blue/grey eyes.
