We all have unique skin types, but whether your complexion is dry, oily, sensitive or blemish-prone, finding the perfect facial cleanser to keep problems at bay can prove pretty tricky.
It all boils down to the texture and of course, the ingredients. You see, the texture of skincare products is no longer simply a bi-product of formulation; it’s a whole other area of expertise. ‘Texture is really important, but people make mistakes by picking a consistency that isn’t right for their skin type,’ explains Dr Stephanie Williams.
To give you a helping hand, we’ve rounded up eight of our favourite cleansers, each of them formulated to tackle a different concern...
If your skin is dry… For dry skin, oily formulas work an absolute dream – the lipid, rich and silken consistency will cure the most parched of complexions, restoring your skins moisture levels to normality.
A top tip from us? Avoid cleansers that contain alcohol and chemicals like sodium, as they can lead to further drying. We love: Murad Renewing Cleansing Oil, £25 at MuradIf your skin is oily… Our skin tends to react in the opposite way to the way we want it to - for example, the more vigorously we attempt to remove oil and sebum, the more our skin will produce to replace it.
Gel formulas eliminate oil without stripping your skin and micellar water will gently cleanse without being too detersive. So what better than a micellar/gel hybrid? We love: La Roche Posay Make-up Remover Micellar Water Gel, £12 at EscentualIf your skin is sensitive… Be cautious you’re not using a cleanser that will aggravate your poor complexion further. Choose a basic, frills-free liquid that will remove make-up and dirt in one fell swoop while looking after your skin.
Micellar water is an absolute hit with sensitive skin – it’s like giving your complexion a refreshing shower. It’s formed of tiny oil molecules suspended in water and, with the help of a cotton pad, it'll wipe away all of the day’s impurities. We love: Garnier Pure Active Micellar Cleansing Water, £3.32 at SuperdrugIf you’re prone to blemishes…Sebum and impurities build up on our skin daily, and if they're not removed regularly they can oxidise with the air - ergo leading to blemishes and blackheads.
Breakout fighting ingredients like salicylic acid will wash away any dead cells, dirt and excess oils to help wipe out both existing and future breakouts. We love: Dermalogica Clear Start Breakout Clearing Foaming Wash, £13.10 at DermalogicaIf your skin is normal… If you have normal skin, it's likely you suffer from limited blemishes or imperfections.
Opt for a cleanser that exfoliates as well as moisturises – this helps to maintain the balance of your skin. We love: SK:N Facial Exfoliating Cleanser, £26 at Skn ClinicsIf you have combination skin…Combination skin can make choosing a cleanser difficult, namely because you have two different skin types rolled into one - from oily and acne-prone to dry and sensitive.
Depending on the combination, you either want a gentle yet acne-fighting formula or one that is basic, while giving your complexion a hit of hydration. We love: Elethea Pure Balancing Cleanser, £36 at EletheaIf your skin is dull…Vitamin C is the go-to ingredient for reviving dull skin, so look out for any cleansers that contain it.
Not only is it an effective antioxidant, but it will leave your complexion ultra-smooth and supple, as it stimulates the production of collagen. We love: Elemis White Brightening Even Tone Cleanser, £29.50 at Feel UniqueIf your pores are clogged…Oils, dirt and dead skin cells can all clog our pores, which leads to both blackheads and blemishes forming. If they're not emptied regularly, they will enlarge - ergo leading to further issues.
Use a deep cleaning cleanser that removes all impurities, no matter how far down they are - this will leave you with super-clean and baby soft skin. We love: DHC Pore Cleansing Oil, £20 at DHC
