Decoding Sunscreen: What is SPF, UVA and UVB?

The sun is OUT and that can only mean one thing, SPF! Although you should be wearing SPF all year round, I think we can all be guilty of only using sunscreen when it’s sunny. Everybody knows you need to wear a higher SPF in summer, but why? Who even knows what UVA and UVB are? Keep reading to find out how to keep your skin protected this summer.
The Basics: SPF
Sun protection factor otherwise known as SPF helps to protect your skin from UVB Rays. The SPF strength (SPF 15, SPF 30) is a measure of how well it protects your skin from being damaged due to sunburn. During colder moths, SPF 15 is recommended whereas in summer when the UV index is higher an SPF30+ is recommended. Not only does SPF prevent sunburn but some can also offer UVA protection which help to minimise to skin damage.
What is UVA?
Ultraviolet A radiation (UVA) has a longer wavelength than UVB and can damage the skin much deeper. UVA Rays can be responsible for premature skin, leading to wrinkles. The damage from UVA rays can usually be seen over a long period of time, which most of us do not see until after the damage is done. To find an SPF with UVA protection, look for the UVA symbol in a circle or SPF labelled as broad-spectrum protection.
What is UVB?
Ultraviolet B Radiation (UVB) has a shorter wavelength but higher energy than UVA and the damage caused can often be seen on the surface of the skin. UVB is usually linked to skin burn, which unlike UVA, the damage can be shown within a shorter period of time. The higher the SPF, the higher of UVB protection - meaning the longer you can stay in the sun without being burnt.
