Shea Butter Empowers Ghana Women And Their Communities
This year, The Body Shop is celebrating 25 years of female empowerment with The Tungeiya Women’s Association in Ghana. They started their partnership in 1994 after The Body Shop founder, Dame Anita Roddick, visited Ghana and was inspired by the women who had treasured shea butter for generations.
There’s A She In Every Shea
From 50 women in 1994, the Association has now grown into a 640 women operation that spans across 11 villages. They use an 18-step process passed down for generations to handcraft 390 tons of shea butter every year. For the past 25 years, The Body Shop have bought this shea butter, paying a premium on top of the agreed upon fair price.
This partnership has empowered Ghanaian women and their communities. Together, they’ve helped Tungteiya’s social fund invest in community projects like healthcare, sanitation, water and education, benefiting 49 thousand people every year.
