If you’re attending a special event and need your makeup to look extra dewy, then forget everything you thought you knew about how to apply foundation.
GLOSSYBOX makeup artist Lucinka helped me to create this simple five-step guide to achieving a long-lasting, flawless base that stays glowy for hours!
Step 1: Prep Your Skin
Listen up Glossies! The secret to a flawless foundation finish is a great base. Before applying any makeup you should always go through your full skincare routine – we’re talking cleansing, toning, moisturising, and, of course, priming.
Apply a pea-sized amount of the Avant primer from this month’s box, starting at the centre of your face and working your way outwards. It will smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, while softening and hydrating your skin.
Step 2: Hide Redness And Spots
Now that you’ve got the perfect canvas, it’s time to apply your makeup. Start by covering up any small imperfections (think blemishes or dark spots) using a concealer. Apply the product directly onto the areas you want to conceal, then gently blot and blend it in using a damp beauty sponge.
Lucinka recommends pairing the MAC Pro Longwear Concealer with Real Techniques' Miracle Complexion Sponge. While this lightweight and long-wear concealer stays put for up to 15 hours, the blending sponge boasts a precision tip that perfectly targets small areas. A match made in heaven!
Step 3: How To Apply Foundation
The first thing you need to do is choose the right foundation for you. Lucinka loves the NARS Sheer Glow liquid foundation. It provides a high-quality, seamless coverage, while also giving your skin a smooth and dewy finish.
Simply dispense a small amount of product onto the back of your hand, then gently dip either your beauty blender or foundation brush into the product, and blend it into your skin. Lucinka prefers to use Real Techniques’ Expert Face Brush for this step. You might remember it from our 2018 Advent Calendar!
Insider Tip: Lucinka starts on the outside of her face, working inwards to ensure her foundation is evenly distributed. It’s easier to blend excess foundation into larger surfaces like your cheeks and forehead, than around your nose and eyes!
Step 4: Brighten Your Complexion
When you’ve fully blended your foundation, Lucinka recommends applying a concealer that is two shades lighter than your foundation under your eyes, on your chin, and across your forehead. This will brighten your complexion, hiding dark under eye circles and lighting up your whole face.
For this step, Lucinka applies Maybelline’s Instant Eraser Eye Concealer and then blends it in using Illamasqua’s Round Buffing Brush.
Step 5: Don’t Forget Your Setting Spray
While the combination of a high-end primer and long-wear products is a great way to ensure your makeup stays put throughout your whole event, the final step to achieving flawless foundation is to use a setting spray.
It will not only prolong the wear of your makeup, but it will stop your foundation from settling into any fine lines and pores. Basically, it stops your makeup from fading or smudging, while giving your whole look a smooth and radiant finish.
