One of our favourite ways to herald in the season is by switching up the contents of our makeup bags - and what better way to do so than by adding some new wintery eyeshadow shades into the mix? eyeshadow

The cold weather doesn't necessarily mean resorting to darker hues and neutral wintery colours that are quite simply a more intense version of their summer counterparts, oh no. We're taking our cue from the catwalks and mixing things up a little.

Here are six wearable trends that can instantly update your look and add an edge to your festive style...

Toffee Tones Who doesn’t have a shimmery brown or taupe eyeshadow in their beauty repertoire? This season the brown staple of choice gets a sweet reboot with the no less flattering toffee tone. Wear it against dewy, strobed skin for a catwalk copy or smudge a brown liner into the lash line for a more everyday finish. We love: NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Yogurt, £5

The Midas Touch Smokey eyes with a hint of gold running through still have drama. Gold shimmer on the inner corners has always been a makeup artist trick for drawing attention to the eyes, but wearing it across the lid gives even more pulling power. We love: Bourjois Smoky Stories Quad Eyeshadows, £7.99

Metallic ShimmerShimmer doesn’t mean showgirl when it’s subtle and cuts through opaque pigments to give eyes a 3D effect. This new breed of mixed-metals are so fine they enhance and decorate the eye without swamping them in sparkle. We love: Stila Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow in Comex Platinum, £33.50

Graphic Eyeliner Taking its cue from the trend for graphic liner, it’s time to get clever with black pigments. It’s a look that isn’t dark, scary or frightening, but open, bright and look-at-me. We love: L’Oreal Paris Super Liner Smokissime, £7.99

Eye Gloss A no makeup, makeup day can be instantly elevated to something a little more stylish by washing lids in a clear and glossy sheen. It draws attention to the eyes in the simplest possible way. We love: MAC Studio Eye Gloss, £16

Rouge Noir Since it graced Uma Thurman’s nails in Pulp Fiction the black cherry of Rouge Noir has been a beauty icon, but with its 20th anniversary reboot it’s now also a wearable shade on eyes. It’s taken smokey eyes to the next level and makes eye colours really pop. We love: Chanel Rouge Noir Illusion D’Ombre Rouge Noir, £25
